What is a Retina Specialist?

Retina Specialist.jpgRetina specialists are specialists who treat diseases of the retina.  The retina is the sensory portion of the eye, the layer at the rear of the eye that contains light-sensitive cells which trigger nerve impulses.  The impulses pass to the brain through the optic nerve, forming a visual image.  Retina health is critical to good vision.

Retina specialists are medical doctors that are board certified in Ophthalmology.  A retina specialist is a subspecialty of ophthalmology.  To become a retina specialist, an ophthalmologist must complete a two year fellowship beyond the standard ophthalmology residency.

A retina specialist is often utilized when vision cannot be improved with glasses, contacts or corrective surgery.  A retina specialist is also called upon if an abnormality is found during a routine eye examination.

To make an appointment with a retina specialist, please call Associated Retina Consultants in Phoenix.
